Tutorial For Modifying Your Clearinghouse Information

This tutorial will guide you through the steps involved to modify a node in the clearinghouse. If at any time during the Modify process you encounter an error, the appropriate error message will be displayed in the browser window.

Step 1: Select Node For Modification
  • Select "Modify Your Node" from http://registry.gsdi.org/.
  • Select your node name from the node pulldown list. Select the contact for the selected node from the contact pulldown list. Enter the password for the selected node.
    • Note: Your password was provided in the email you received confirming the node addition or modification to the clearinghouse. If you do not know your password, use the Forgot Your Password section, select the node from the pulldown list and the password will be mailed to the registered contact for that node.

Options available from the modify menu.
Select node name, contact and enter password or
have the password emailed to the node contact.

  • If the selected node, contact name and password do not correspond with the Clearinghouse database you will get the following error message.

Error page.

Step 2: Enter Your Clearinghouse Modifications

Enter the Server Description Information.

  • Select the appropriate ISO server categories to describe your data holdings. Check all categories for the types of data your node describes.
Modify Node Example
Select the approprate ISO server categories.

  • Select the appropriate U.S. Framework geographic data theme(s) to describe your clearinghouse node. Optional for non-U.S. clearinghouse nodes.
Modify Node Example
Select the approprate U.S. Framework themes.

  • Select the appropriate web mapping methods/services that are available and can be used to obtain your data holdings. Check all methods/services that are available.

Select the appropriate server web mapping categories.

  • Note: Two new fields have been added to the Registry for allowing us to perform title and full text searches against your node. Remember to populate these new required fields. These fields should be populated with words that are contained in your metadata to fulfill the title and full text searches.

  • You can edit any of the following information:

    • Host Name: This must be the machine name of your Z39.50 server.

    • Port: The port that the Z39.50 service is running on. This port can not be behind a firewall. This value is specified in your sapi.ini or NT interface.

    • Database Name: The name of the database that contains your metadata. This value is specified in your sapi.ini or NT interface.

    • Title Search Word: This word will be used to verify that the Z39.50 service is searchable and that the title field can be searched. This should be a word that exists in the title of one or more of your metadata.

    • Text Search Word. This word will be used to verify that the Z39.50 service is searchable and that the text field can be searched. This should be a word that exists in the text of one or more of your metadata.

    • Perform Spatial Search. By default, this option is selected and spatial searches are performed against your node. If you do not want a spatial search performed on this node - unselect this option. You should only un-select this if your metadata does not contain bounding coordinates.

    • Platform: This is the platform that the Z39.50 service is running on ex. NT, UNIX, Solaris, etc.

    • Website WebURL. WebURL of the website associated with your clearinghouse node.

    • Server Latitude. Latitude, in decimal degrees, of where the Z39.50 server resides. This is used by the browse registry map function to display your server location.

    • Server Longitude. Longitude, in decimal degrees, of where the Z39.50 server resides. This is used by the browse registry map function to display your server location.

Enter the remaining Server Host Information.

  • Enter the predominant geographic extent of data served. This spatial extent describes the geographic area of your metadata and data holdings. You should select the "View Selected Coordinates on Map" button to view your entered values on a map for final verification.

Fill in the Correct Geographic Extent of Data Served.

  • Enter the node contact information. This information is used for communication between the clearinghouse staff and the node staff. All updates, inquires, confirmations and password information will be sent to the registered contact email address.

Enter the server contact information.

  • After you have made all of the required modifications select the "Submit My Changes" button located at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3: Confirm Your Modifications

Confirm modifications.

  • If an error occurs while performing the above tests, an error will be displayed and the user is redirected back to the modification page.
  • Note: Any modifications that are not directly related to your server (ex. Long Title, Contact Information, etc.) will be updated in the database. Server related changes (ex. Host Name, Port, Database, etc) will not be updated in the database until the modification is completed and your node successfully passes all of the required tests.
